What is Future Shorts?

The Future Shorts Festival is the biggest pop up film festival of its kind, showcasing the most exciting short films from around the world. Anyone, anywhere can set up a screening, forming a massive network of cinematic events and becoming part of a powerful global community.

Currently, the festival takes place in over 50 cities and 17 countries, showcasing a single programme of the best short films often alongside live music, DJs and art. From London to Moscow, Perth to Jakarta, the screenings take place across a huge variety of spaces including, music halls, cinemas, theatres, galleries, clubs, warehouses.

The Eagleman Stag – Dir: Michael Please / UK / 2010

The Eagleman Stag is a unique 9-minute stop-motion animated film that depicts a man’s haunting obsession with the passage of time and his unorthodox relationship with a beetle. Directed by Michael Please, the production was a highly ambition final year film produced while studying at the RCA – it is based on a story he previously wrote entitled “The Life and Time of Peter Eagleman.” Orchestral music was integral to this film and composed in tandem with the animation process.

Winner of Best Short Animation at BAFTA, and Special Jury Prize at SXSW.

God of Love – Dir: Luke Matheny / US / 2010

Matheny, who wrote, directed and starred in this 19-minute inventive comedy about love-inducing darts won the Oscar for Best Live Action Short in 2011. A recent film student graduate at New York University, God of Love was produced as his thesis film project while enrolled at NYU’s MFA program. At the Oscars, he was hailed as delivering one of the best acceptance speeches of the evening and thanked his mother for her contribution to the movie.

Oscar Winner in 2011 for Best Live Action Short Film.

Deeper than Yesterday – Dir: Ariel Kleinman / Australia / 2010

Filmed on an old decommissioned military submarine with 35mm cameras, Deeper Than Yesterday tells the story of a Russian crew who suffer a rather savage form of cabin fever. Directed by Ariel Kleiman, a graduate of the VCA at the University of Melbourne, recently said  “The more uncomfortable I feel making a film the better it will be.” Jurors have compared the film to “The Lower Depths,” Maxim Gorky’s best-known play – very Russian with long period of isolation and madness.

Winner of International Short Filmmaking Award at Sundance.

The External World - Dir: David O’Reilly / Germany, Iceland / 2010

A boy learns to play the piano in this rather dark but occasionally humorous mediation on the anxieties and fears of a modern civilized society. Created as a lo-fi animation, The External World is a surreal seventeen-minute collection of vignettes which borrows themes from pop culture, cinema and videogames – classic and contemporary. Some have heralded this short as “a unique reconstruction of the universe” while O’Reilly recently noted in an interview, “I like creating experimental films that have an emotional function.”
Luminaris – Dir: Juan Pablo Zaramella / Argentina / 2011

Inspired by the Argentinian instrumental tango piece entitled “Lluvia de Estrellas” (Star Rain), Luminaris tells the story of a man living in a world controlled by time by light. Each day inhabitants of this fictional world awake and are pulled, as if by some otherworldly force, to their jobs by sunlight. Combining pixilation and stop motion techniques; the surrealist short pairs styles reminiscent of art deco with black cinema. Zaramella explains, "Originally, I approached the project as a puppet animation story, but doing some pixilation tests in the gardens of Fontevraud, just for fun, the seed of the present short was born: the idea of sunlight as a magnetic force.”

Winner of the Audience and Fipresci Award at Annecy 2011 International Animation Festival

Radio Amina – Dir: Orlando von Einsiedel / Nigeria / 2011

Radio Amina, part documentary, part narrative, tells the story of Amina Dibir, a 12 year old street hawker from Kano, Nigeria and her imaginary radio show where she gets to say all the things she wishes she could in real life. It is an intimate look at the discrepancies between the life of a girl from Northern Nigeria and her reality.

WA SCREENINGS ONLY - Local film of the month

The Life of Cardboard – Dir: Wayne Nicholson / Australia / 2011

This surrealist short film is a visual treat and an introduction to the character of "Carl DeSouza" who's weird and wonderful co-dependence with the textile cardboard is told through a trinity of films detailing specific plot-points in his life.

DAMIAN CALLINAN in THE MERGER

Damian Callinan is coming to WA in search of recruits for the Bodgy Creek Footy Team … but he’s not looking where you might think!

Country Arts WA and SmokeFree WA in association with Dirty Work Comedy and Shire of Merredin  are proud to present The Merger at Cummins Theatre on 18th of August. The Merger is the third Shows on the Go tour for 2011 travelling to Broome, Port Hedland, Newman, Exmouth, Canarvon, Cervantes, Merredin, Thornlie, Bunbury, Esperance, Hopetoun and Mandurah in August.

The Merger, sequel to the multi-award winning Sportsman’s Night, is the third show for which Damian Callinan has been nominated for the prestigious Melbourne Comedy Festival Barry Award. After selling out in Adelaide and Melbourne and featuring on the Comedy Festival Gala on Network Ten, Damian now brings the attack down the flank into Western Australia.

‘We're really pleased and excited to be bringing The Merger to WA. Damian's work is very funny and tackles big questions at the same time. Footy clubs are a big part of any regional community and people will be able to relate to and laugh with Damian Callinan’s show.’ says Paul MacPhail, Acting CEO at Country Arts WA.

The Merger
Tickets - $35 Adult/$30 concession

In a sequel to his multi-award winning Sportsman's Night, Damian revisits the dysfunctional Bodgy Creek Roosters Football Club.
The township has seen better days - the mill's closed; the Tidy Town sign has fallen into the long grass and the weir is as dry as a spinster's gusset. The dying town is about to claim its next
victim.
Unable to field even one full side, the footy club will either have to fold or merge with their arch rivals - the Hudson's Flat Redbacks. But prodigal son coach Troy Carrington has other ideas; to save the club and serve his socially aware agenda, he embarks on a programme to recruit players from the Asylum Seekers Refuge Centre.
Will the new players cope with pre season training while fasting for Ramadan? Damian tells the Roosters' story in a series of hilarious character monologues, from Tu the ehtnic hmong flautist, to boisterous brute Bull Barlow, the Roosters' president, to his cinematically inclined grandson, Neil.

Roman Rudnysky - International Concert Pianist

Thursday the 23rd June –
7pm - $35 Adult / $30 Concession

Rudnytsky in an internationally active concert pianist of Ukrainian background whose frequent performances take him all over the world - to every continent and places in-between. He is in fact one of the most travelled of all concert pianists, having played in more countries than almost all others. As of 2010, he has performed in about 95 countries - more countries than most classical performers of any kind have played in.

In addition to performances in capital cities and important musical centres, he often plays in places away from the musical mainstream, bringing the world and pleasure of classical music to audiences which seldom experience this type of music in live performance. He has received much acclaim in the world's press and many reinvitations.

Born in New York into a prominent Ukrainian musical family, he began the study of piano at age 4 and gave his first full recital at age 7. He is a graduate of the famous Juilliard School in New York and also did additional studies at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland and at
masterclasses in Austria (the "Mozarteum") and Italy.

Mr. Rudnytsky is a prize-winner in 10 piano competitions, including such prestigious ones as the International Leventritt Competition (New York) and International J.S. Bach Competition (Washington) and, in Italy, the "F.Busoni" and "A. Casagrande" International Piano Competitions. He has made numerous recordings in Poland, Australia and the United States.

In addition to his many recitals, Mr. Rudnytsky has also appeared as a soloist with many orchestras around the world. To date, he has played over 45 different works for piano and orchestra with them. A great honour indeed, he gave the British, Latin American and Australian premiere performances of the recently-discovered Liszt "Concerto No. 3 in E Flat" between 1990 and 1993.

He also conducts master classes and workshops for local piano students and teachers during the course of his travels. The settings for these range from universities to small, rural towns and villages.

Since 1984, he has played concerts and conducted master classes in more than 35 countries under the auspices of US Embassies---in a number of them: repeatedly.

Since 1972, Mr. Rudnytsky has been a member of the piano faculty of the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio (U.S.A.). He is a recipient of that institution's "Distinguished Professor Award" in recognition of his concert activities. He previously served on the piano faculties of the Indiana University School of Music (Bloomington, Indiana) and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory, in addition to being "Artist-in-Residence" at two Australian universities.
