The Merger
DAMIAN CALLINAN in THE MERGER
Damian Callinan is coming to WA in search of recruits for the Bodgy Creek Footy Team … but he’s not looking where you might think!
Country Arts WA and SmokeFree WA in association with Dirty Work Comedy and Shire of Merredin are proud to present The Merger at Cummins Theatre on 18th of August. The Merger is the third Shows on the Go tour for 2011 travelling to Broome, Port Hedland, Newman, Exmouth, Canarvon, Cervantes, Merredin, Thornlie, Bunbury, Esperance, Hopetoun and Mandurah in August.
The Merger, sequel to the multi-award winning Sportsman’s Night, is the third show for which Damian Callinan has been nominated for the prestigious Melbourne Comedy Festival Barry Award. After selling out in Adelaide and Melbourne and featuring on the Comedy Festival Gala on Network Ten, Damian now brings the attack down the flank into Western Australia.
Unable to field one full side, the footy club will either have to fold or merge with their arch rivals - The Hudson’s Flat Redbacks. But prodigal son, coach Troy Carrington, has other ideas. To save the club, he embarks on a program to recruit players from the Asylum Seekers Refuge Centre.

Roman Rudnysky - International Concert Pianist

Rudnytsky in an internationally active concert pianist of Ukrainian background whose frequent performances take him all over the world - to every continent and places in-between. He is in fact one of the most travelled of all concert pianists, having played in more countries than almost all others. As of 2010, he has performed in about 95 countries - more countries than most classical performers of any kind have played in.
In addition to performances in capital cities and important musical centres, he often plays in places away from the musical mainstream, bringing the world and pleasure of classical music to audiences which seldom experience this type of music in live performance. He has received much acclaim in the world's press and many reinvitations.
Born in New York into a prominent Ukrainian musical family, he began the study of piano at age 4 and gave his first full recital at age 7. He is a graduate of the famous Juilliard School in New York and also did additional studies at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland and at
masterclasses in Austria (the "Mozarteum") and Italy.
Mr. Rudnytsky is a prize-winner in 10 piano competitions, including such prestigious ones as the International Leventritt Competition (New York) and International J.S. Bach Competition (Washington) and, in Italy, the "F.Busoni" and "A. Casagrande" International Piano Competitions. He has made numerous recordings in Poland, Australia and the United States.
In addition to his many recitals, Mr. Rudnytsky has also appeared as a soloist with many orchestras around the world. To date, he has played over 45 different works for piano and orchestra with them. A great honour indeed, he gave the British, Latin American and Australian premiere performances of the recently-discovered Liszt "Concerto No. 3 in E Flat" between 1990 and 1993.
He also conducts master classes and workshops for local piano students and teachers during the course of his travels. The settings for these range from universities to small, rural towns and villages.
Since 1984, he has played concerts and conducted master classes in more than 35 countries under the auspices of US Embassies---in a number of them: repeatedly.
Since 1972, Mr. Rudnytsky has been a member of the piano faculty of the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio (U.S.A.). He is a recipient of that institution's "Distinguished Professor Award" in recognition of his concert activities. Honey Spot
HONEY SPOT TO TOUR REGIONAL WA!
The future looks sweet as Yirra Yaakin Theatre shares their celebrated play Honey Spot with audiences across WA. Written by acclaimed Indigenous playwright Jack Davis and directed by Kyle Morrison this is sure to be a treat, captivating new and veteran playgoers
alike.
Honey Spot is the first of two productions that Country Arts WA is proud to be touring to CircuitWest venues throughout WA this year, visiting Esperance, Kalgoorlie, Merredin, Mandurah, Moora, Geraldton, Carnarvon, Karratha and Port Hedland. Set in regional WA in the 1980s, Honey Spot looks at two cultures living together with different philosophies on land conservation, revealing how friendship can overcome these differences.
A friendship blossoms when Tim, a young Aboriginal boy, helps Peggy, the local Forest Ranger’s daughter, with her performance for a ballet scholarship. The two meet and rehearse at the ‘honey spot’ creating a dance piece merging the earthy feel of traditional Noongar dance with the fluid grace of classical ballet. Country Arts WA’s Chief Executive Officer Jessica Machin says, “We are thrilled to present this popular and important show to regional WA audiences, after its successful Perth season at Yirra Yaakin Theatre.
“The Honey Spot story remains both timely and timeless, as it touches on themes ranging from environmentalism to reconciliation to friendship.” Honey Spot features seasoned Aboriginal actor Lynette Narkle who appeared in the original 1985 production playing Tim’s mother, real life father and daughter, George and Katya Shevtsov, in the roles of Peggy and Peggy’s father the Forest Ranger. Ian Wilkes will play the role of Tim, with talented musician and actor, Phillip Walley-Stack taking on the role of Cousin William. Emma McCoy provides musical accompaniment on cello.
